Halla Bjorgvinsdottir, Reykjavik University Faculty of Law, and Fridrik Arni Fridriksson Hirst, University of Iceland Faculty of Law were awarded the LOGOS grant for 2011. The grant is awarded for excellent educational performance in law studies at the University of Iceland and Reykjavik University.

Óttar Pálsson, Supreme Court Attorney, has joined LOGOS Legal Services as a partner. Ottar will advise companies and investors on M&A and capital markets related transactions, banking and financial restructurings, in addition to becoming engaged in commercial litigation.

Ottar served as the Chief Executive Officer of ALMC hf. (previously Straumur Burdaras Investment bank hf.) from March 2009 up until the end of 2010, and lead the bank´s operational and financial restructuring. Ottar will serve on the Board of ALMC hf. in conjunction with the law practice.

Ottar was the General Counsel of Straumur Burdaras Investment bank hf., from September 2006 to March 2009. Before that time he worked at Adalsteinsson and Partners and LOGOS Legal Services, as a partner from 2002-2006.

Ottar graduated from the University of Iceland Faculty of Law in 1997, he studied at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), Faculty of Law, in 1996 and 1997, and finished his Master of Laws (LL.M) in Company, Banking and Securities Law from University College London, in November 2001. Ottar became a Supreme Court Attorney in 2006.

Some Thoughts on the Causes of the 2008 Financial Crisis
(From the Perspective of a UK Investment Banker Who Saw it Unfold)

The conference will start with lunch at Nordica Hotel, second floor, 12:00 Monday 7 September and will finish at 13:30.

Jas Bains will give a short presentation of the underlying causes of the 2008 Financial Crisis seen from his view as a banker at Barclays Capital in London. Barclays Capital was and remains a global market leader in structured products.

Jas Bains is a Solicitor in England and Wales at LOGOS Legal Services in London. Jas is a Cambridge University graduate and trained and qualified as a solicitor at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London. After 4 years at Freshfields, Jas joined ING Bank, London and later Barclays Capital, London where he worked in the Structured Capital Markets team. Jas joined LOGOS in London early 2009 and leads the firm’s UK qualified team on Banking and Finance Law as well as Restructuring.

On February 16, 2007 LOGOS signed a contract sponsoring an assistant professorship for administration law at the University of Iceland for the next three years. Gunnar Sturluson, the Managing Partner of LOGOS, Kristin Ingolfsdottir, the rector of the University of Iceland and Páll Hreinsson, dean at the Faculty of Law, signed the agreement at an event marking the beginning of the 100th anniversary of LOGOS.
